This was true only for people who didn't know how to use a computer. And the fault was on MS side.
By default, after installation, every MS Office program had the screen filled with toolbars.
And, surprise, surprise, today is the same. The damn Ribbon uses almost 1/3 of the vertical space. And you cannot have individual toolbars anymore. It is all or nothing. And this is for the native programm. The "web" version is a total disaster in GUI design.
