Ask HN: How to maintain an all-day buzz
14 points by NoRagrets on Sept 11, 2022 | hide | past | favorite | 17 comments
I haven’t had a drink in 3-4 months(health reasons) and I had a really nice Sauvignon Blanc at brunch. It was a nice mellow buzz.

Which got me thinking..how do I maintain that low level purring feel all day long? I am not fond of alcohol as a supplement or anything smoky. I like to stay on the right side of the law. I am leery of Pharma interventions.

I don’t think meditation would do it for me. It doenst give me the same kind of buzz. I am very reactive emotionally. Unless I walk around with headphones all day, not sure if chanting, music and the like would work. Maybe a wearable? Like a dose of feel goodness every couple of hours?

I like the idea of a wearable and a brain interface that stimulates the brain buzz feeling. Anything out there?

I've been making and drinking Mullein tea and it will give you a very nice, lightweight, mellow euphoric buzz.

It takes quite a bit of mullein to make a strong tea. I make mine in our little espresso maker and run just an ounce or two of water through it and then let the mullein sit and steep for about a 1/2 an hour or more, and then I run a full carafe of water through. I put a filter in the bottom of the coffee holder to keep the tiny hairs on the leaves out of the tea. A coffee filter will work fine but you'll have to cut it size.

After the first run of the water the tea will be a weak looking light green, but the 2nd round it will come out looking like a strong Black tea, and it tastes very similar to that. I add a teaspoon of raw honey to it and it's delicious.

You can buy it online but where I live it grows wild and is abundant and easy to find, and it can be found most everywhere in the U.S. and is very easy to ID.

Thanks! I used to grow mullein at the farm as a contract grower. I don’t know the final product, but it was used in some respiratory support tea. I have been getting more requests after CA wildfires but have paused herbal growing. I think it’s also used as a smoking herb to clear the lungs. It also creates a lot of mucus in the lungs/passages thus pushing out infections.

Synthwave works in that way for me, some great authors to train your youtube recommendations: Gunship, Wise, Extra Terra, Max Brhon, Head Splitter, Revizia, Infraction, TTKXNDR, Moris Blak, Wayfloe, Fury Weekend, and many others. I have 7000+ tracks and the library keeps growing, so I will never get bored. I play them at minimum volume making it almost a subconscious experience, and turn it up when more power is needed.

During Covid, the headphones were permanently attached to me and now that I am back working again, I am trying to cut down headphone usage and ..I guess interact more with people. Thanks for the recommendations..will check them out.

It sounds to me like you want THC. I don't know what side of the law that is, where you're at.

I'd find a way to dose sublingually or something that you are okay with. You want to be able to reliably dose an amount that gets you the mellowness, so edibles are a bad idea (unreliable).

You can vape it. It's not smoky, and the smell only lasts a few seconds. Easy not to go too hard, since results are near-instant.

It won't last too long (especially if you build any tolerance)--a couple hours max, usually.

Combine with music.

I have many things I do to feel good, many of which are mentioned here. The only things that have ever given me a true buzz are alcohol and THC. I have not explored any other chemicals besides caffeine, but I have tried a great many things like sleep patterns, dietary changes, meditation, running, music, etc.

Caffeine is probably next-closest, and working out can give a real "glow" sometimes. I can also get a bit of a euphoric feeling just being present in some situations--family gatherings and concerts come to mind--but not on command.

Why not a wearable than an ingestible? If THC(or other stimulants) light up something upstairs, why not cut the middle man and go directly to the source of the sensations?

Coffee, tea, or Mountain Dew. Probably not soda for health reasons, but that's often why people drink it.

Tea has some L-Theanine in it which adds to mellowness too. For simplicity, you can do black tea, steeped in boiling water for 2-4 minutes, no sugar.

Coffee can be a little strong too and I've moved away from espressos to instant coffees, where I can control the dosage.

I used to have 6 cups a tea/day and then went cold turkey. I felt the effects but not as brutal as caffeine withdrawal.

Really good quality aged pue’er tea is dynamite but it was actually too buzzy. And I associate it with the ritual of drinking tea and I can’t just drink it anytime/anywhere.

Mountain Dew, universally loved and the fav of truckers, gamers and coders…too much sugar.

I recommend water. Good lifestyle which makes you happy is good enough, no need for mood altering substances which is a slippery slope that can lead to dependence or addiction.

Cultivate a life of happiness by making good choices and let your choices snowball. If your life is so good you will be happier than any substance could make you feel.

>If your life is so good you will be happier than any substance could make you feel

this is massively false because nothing compares to injecting heroin which is why its so hard to quit and life becomes dull once clean

This makes me want to ask: What is Happiness?

Lift heavy weights and go for a run to start your day > take a shower and end with a minute of cold water shower > end with a cup of tea/coffee and a fruit bowl to kickoff your day

This is the only thing that has kept me sane the last year or so

I have switched to kettlebells as I didn’t have access to the gym during covid. I like doing short steps and multiple reps. It does have a certain feel goodness, but it’s not a ‘buzz’

Microdose shrum and go for a nice little bike ride. Then get back and have a coffee or tea and you're set

Gabapentin and Tramadol work for me. I do 1 week use 1 week tolerance break to keep addiction away.

This is a terrible idea. Tramadol is an opioid. Using the two drugs together increases the risk of overdose.

Sounds like something that needs a deep dive..is there someplace where I can read more about it?
