Zuckerberg has a fiduciary responsibility to optimize shareholder value. If it's not illegal but it increases shareholder value then you can bet money on what choices he'll make.
It's not one platform. It's a set of independent platforms that sometimes federate. The M/AP federation experience is a third-class experience. Cool kids don't federate, they're already on the server with the people they talk to.
If I said, “I want a setup that is usable for an agentic coding workflow, and it MUST be local”, what’s the smallest/cheapest option right now?
It’s _technically_ possible to get agents running on all kinds of setups but there seems to be an (undefined) floor for useful setups.
A lot of the stories people have about getting setups running on relatively low end hardware turn out to have huge compromises or run into issues on anything but trivial cases. I’ve found it hard to find a consensus.
Or maybe I just don’t like the multiple thousand dollar price tags people are suggesting…
Sorry, I don't have those skills, or any spare time.
And if you want a system whereby software only gets made available if distro-providers care enough, then that's fine. But you're putting a filter between the software producer and non-technical users, and you should be aware that this is a choice you're making.
You probably haven't read the article, but the software they build is a TUI, not a Desktop GUI (in fact a big chunk of the article is how they need to fight against Flatpak and AppImage because they are designed around the assumption of a GUI).
Worth a white paper to see which costs less energy, using Apple's built in LLM, or downloading and displaying all the FB ads using radio, playback, and screen animation energy.
> habit in captivity by only eating the most expensive of goods
No animal behaviorist, but isn’t this depression? (Nervous system expects one reality, gets a different one, takes whatever ++ it comes across and maximizes it?)
A counter example: I got caught out by the deprecation/sunsetting of anonymous "old.reddit.com" yesterday but it turns out uBlock can filter out the ads, boilerplate, sidebars, join/login buttons etc on the main site. It's actually faster and more usable than the old site now.
> is it ethical to allow a model to give medical advice, knowing that it can be wrong. Most people would say no,
I wouldn't be so sure, most people I've met seem to be all too eager to suggest what worked for them (or they have heard is supposed to work) in conversations about medical issues, so I can't really see the public generally categorizing advice or guidance being given in non-professional setting or by non-experts as unethical. The taxpayers representatives having to bear the costs of the outcomes (at the very least as reductions of tax revenue) I can see being of a different opinion though.
Cost issues aside yeah image embedding tech is really good and can already do tasks like this, LLMs with native image understanding are even better at it.
Reasons this wouldn't work are you'd really need to get it to a good enough and small enough model to run low energy use and very fast to not impact browsing. The other issue is it'll be a fixed target for a period of time so the ads could be tweaked to find how to get them through it.
Absolutely. I can barely sleep when I feel pressure of what I am have to do next day, especially if it is something stressful. When somebody would be measuring performance of my sleep the idea of sleep would be stressing me out.
You seem to be mixing up the different things we are talking about.
Yes, quality is what the earlier commenter is talking about. Yes, idiomatic code is often considered to be what makes code high quality because idiomatic code is believed to make it easier to reach correctness (easier to read, easier to reason about, easier to test, etc.) than if you have to work with "spaghetti", which is considered low quality because it makes it much harder to ensure the code is correct. Quality exists on a gradient. There exists a full spectrum between a complete spaghetti monster mess and perfect architected idiomatic code. This we both read the same way it seems.
Whereas the article is about correctness. The program is either correct or not. Distance was used in the article to share how far away a given program was from being correct. But distance and quality not the same. This is a completely different way to look at software as compared to the topic of quality, as we already established at the beginning of our discussion.
Not really pursuing it at this point, but it seems so intuitive that organizational harnesses will converge on like, agent personas that are constructed just-in-time from shared knowledge graphs.
> You assuming otherwise without reading is a bit offensive.
Yeah sorry, hurling huge LLM conversations at me tends to make me skim them, hope you don't mind I didn't study the conversation you had with ChatGPT in detail.
That you considered someone skimming a chat log offensive yet the act of sharing those chat logs and expecting others to dredge through them, is almost offensive to me. So I guess we can call it even now.
> For this set of constrains, Proton/Wine with a cross-compiled Win32 binary/bundle is literally the only solution (care to name another?)
Cross-compiling the good old way, with a Linux VM, Windows VM and a macOS host (maybe Mac Mini?). I basically have the very same requirements (+ macOS), except zero third party dependencies, and end up doing it this way, all managed with Nix so basically all the installation-bloatyness is something I deal with so users get the exact same experience they expect on their OS.
People tend to forget about token usage when discussing languages with agents.
Python is one of the best, but why use interpreted languages now. Also, the ecosystem is well...
Go is quite good from a token usage point of view.
Rust is not so good due to the complexity of the language.
I see AI agent programming language choice as only two now: Go or Rust.
Good that we as a society are thinking along these lines. Financial autonomy will enable society to incentivize "AI" to create good and services. The free market will reward valuable goods and services, discourage bad products,l (a.k.a. "hallucinations ") and capital allocation will fund the "AI" that works, and extinguish the "AI" that doesn't, eliminating "paperclip maximizers". This could solve all of our "AI" difficulties.
On all fronts we are having a easier time than before.
Healthcare, safety, life expectancy, disease, mental health (yes, you disagree, but it not being existant in the past kinda sets tue bar).
Every other day, my feed seems to be filled with pro-Republican posts, followed by pro-Democratic posts the next. It’s fascinating how the model decided this was the kind of content worth generating.
Yes there is a community version for C++ Builder as well.
