Basically your only hope is to understand the ephemeral nature of software, and place your long-term bets on standard formats with the understanding that no digital application and workflow will survive more than a decade. Even dealing with just data you have to be prepared to convert and modernize. Digital media is new, and its lossless nature has fooled people into thinking it's permanent, but without careful planning to refresh both physical media and formats, it's far more volatile than historical media such as books.
