I am curious how KDE has come along in addressing the bloat issue.

GNOME2 is still more lightweight. Where KDE has gained popularity is with people bailing out from GNOME 3.

FLTK still retains the small-and-fast crown.

False. KDE 4 runs far better that Gnome 2.
