This rings true to me because it has echoed a lot what I am going through right now.
Instead of perl, my tool of choice was Drupal. I built many great things in it, but I just reached a point where I could no longer be passionate about it.
I am different though in that I changed my focus to node.js 5 years ago, because it was something I was excited about and interested in.
I think that's made me a more well rounded programmer, and made me a happier person in the long run.
To the OP, I think you should follow your instincts about Rust. Do it because it interests you not because it's profitable. If you have to take a basically uninteresting day job to do so, you should know that you are in no way different to most of the people out there.
