Most people die from treatable diseases/conditions where treatment has improved over the last few decades due to research. About half of deaths in the US are due to cancer or heart disease, for a start, and this will absolutely hit research into both.

you are assuming that all cancer research has been defunded altogether. And that if the government takes away some money, any ongoing research will come to a halt and we are doomed.

Also, maybe research dollars should emphasize prevention.
