At the top you have the top. At the bottom you have the bottom. You already know those. In the middle, keeping the top and bottom from colliding, you have the people recruited from the bottom by the top, for the job of keeping the top and bottom separated, in exchange for being elevated out of the bottom, but not all the way to the top.
The rich have figured out how to deal with unionists, socialists, and communists. This is not the same as the previous gilded age.
