The Kiel Institut for World Economics (Germany) has calculated that the support by the European Union and its member states has surpassed the support by the US.
While it is true, that the US delivered more weapons, they are far behind in terms of financial support and humanitarian aid.
So in total the US falls behind. It is also important to note, that about 70% of the aid by the US flow back to the US weapons manufacturers.
While Donald Trump demands 500 billion dollars in minerals from Ukraine for further support, their contribution so far is less than 120 billion dollars.
Europe has been dependent on Russian oil and gas for some time correct, but has dramatically reduced imports since 2022 - cutting Russian gas by 80% and oil by over 90%. Additionally more and more european and baltic countries are disconnecting from their grid see ("Baltic states unplug from Russia and join EU power grid"
Also the US counts support as like, the original sticker price value of bone-yards hardware we have shipped them.
And it's such old old stock. Such as the m1a1 tanks we gave them. This is a 1970's design we made up until 1992. The US would never field such ancient tanks ourselves, not without massive overhaul & refurbishment. They also drink fuel like crazy & have demanding-to-maintain old old old gas turbine engines.
We've shipped countless pallets of ammo that is either expiring or expired. We gave them the ancient old stock of 1980's ATACMS that were rotting in place.
Yet we keep saying we give them $X dollars of aid. As if this ancient surplus equipment is as valuable today as what we paid for two three or four decades ago. Equipment we had just lying around, that we were going to have to dispose of somehow, at significant cost to us.
A lot of European support to Ukraine is loans not aid. Also, there isn’t a substitute for the US military aid.
Leaving that aside shouldn’t Europe be donating (not loaning) many times more than the US? Why draw a comparison at all, as if the two should be equal?
