That's funny :) To be fair my first programming with with a octal display and keypad on the motorolla 6800 D2 evaluation kit (https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/mek-6800-d2-comple...) I think it was called. Can't seem to get any hits on that or images though.

No. R2D2 came from film editors' shorthand for a specific piece of film. George Lucas literally got asked by a coworker to "Hand me R2D2", meaning Roll 2 and something-else 2 (I forget what the D was). Lucas did, but also wrote down in his notebook "R2D2. Cool name."
