The core idea here is the subject of “The Goal” by Eli Goldratt. It’s a short novel and presents the case very clearly, although in terms for a factory not a software shop or a grocery store checkout line. It’s a great read, I recommend it.

Since it’s a business book, perhaps easier to sell to management than a blog post?
