[flagged] Stripe closed our account and refuses to migrate our data to another processor

I'm reaching out to the official Stripe support forum here because our account has been closed and Stripe is refusing to export our card data. We are set to lose half our revenue in recurring Stripe subscriptions with no way to migrate them and no recourse. Our crime? Not predicting Stripe's future policies.

We run a dating app. We've been using Stripe for the past 2 years and this wasn't a problem when we signed up, but apparently "all online dating services" was added to the Restricted Businesses list last year (without notice) and now our account has been flagged. Fair enough, there are some sketchy dating apps out there, but we are much closer to Tinder/Bumble/etc. (albeit smaller) than to the mail order bride / escort service end of the spectrum. We take moderation very seriously, have never had any safety incidents, no sexual content, we maintain a low 0.05% dispute rate. Apple and Google happily process our mobile payments, we've had major press, we're as legit as a dating app gets.

Our appeals have been denied, but we were told we could submit a migration request and switch to another payment processor. We requested an extension so we could complete this migration before our account was closed without interrupting our subscriptions, and after some pleading it was granted. I noticed that our dashboard still said our payments would be disabled on the original date, so I asked Stripe to confirm and was told after a couple escalations, "Though it might not appear immediately on your end, don't worry—the time extension has already been recorded and approved". So I didn't worry.

We were approved by a major processor which has completed a significantly more thorough risk assessment than Stripe, at low-risk rates. But when we asked Stripe about migrating our card data, we were told, "Unfortunately, we will not be able to complete your requested data migration. Our team has reviewed your Stripe account and has determined that we are not comfortable with the level of risk presented by completing this data migration". We have appealed and asked for more information, to no avail. We still have not been given any reason for this "level of risk" except that we are a dating app.

Stripe claims (https://docs.stripe.com/get-started/data-migrations/pan-export): "We believe that our customers own the sensitive data they entrust to Stripe, and we work hard to make sure that you have access to this data—even if you’re moving elsewhere. If you decide to leave Stripe for another payment processor, we’ll work with your new processor’s team to securely transfer your credit card data". We trusted Stripe with our payments because of commitments to fairness and portability like this. If our industry was listed on the Restricted Businesses list when we started using Stripe, that would be one thing, but surely we would at least be able to export our data if that changed later, right? Today it is dating apps, tomorrow it may be your business.

Now, our account's original closure date has come, and sure enough, our payments have been disabled. The extension was not honored. I'm sure this was an honest mistake, but I wonder if Stripe has reviewed our risk as carefully as they confirmed our extension (not very). Stripe claims to have 24/7 chat and phone support, but I wasn't able to convince the support AI this was urgent enough to grant me access.

> but I wasn't able to convince the support AI this was urgent enough

TIL you need to hire a prompt engineer to get actual customer support at Stripe.

This type of behavior from stripe is super upsetting, most glaringly the lack of being able to talk to a human and discuss alternatives.

That said, if the service is adding value, they shouldn’t lose half their revenue if they need users to renter their credit card.

For sure, we expect to recover most of this over time, but it looks suspicious to customers who may assume we have actually done something fraudulent or sketchy to get banned by Stripe. I don't think I've ever been asked to re-enter my credit card like this as a customer, and personally I would hesitate, because surely Stripe wouldn't go this far without a good reason? Maybe I assume the worst, but some amount of reputational damage will be done.

Yeah good point, I have seen this before with sites, but is suss.

> "Though it might not appear immediately on your end, don't worry—the time extension has already been recorded and approved".

Did they have no response for not keeping their word?

We have now received two identical messages from Stripe: "I wanted to let you know that we're currently reviewing your account and will be back in touch as soon as we have an update". Still no solution or explanation a week later.

We reached out 14 hours ago but have not heard back yet. Will update when we do.

Kinda sounds like fraud to me.

They said they would extend, they didn't, you have damages.

Y’all need to stop using Stripe.

And use what instead?

It's worth noting that many of the linked "alternatives" either use stripe themselves or require you to bring your own payment processor.

Maybe I don't understand the context here, but Stripe doesn't have a monopoly on payment processing. Stripe flat out rejects cards from a few countries. Companies that serve Europeans can't use Stripe since they fall under US surveillance laws, which are fundamentally incompatible with the GDPR. So there generally are plenty of payment processors to choose from.

Cash App?

Just get on a plane and visit their corporate office in San Francisco and ask to speak to someone.

Does that actually work?

Yes. GPT summary;

"Vinod Khosla shared a story about his persistence in closing a deal with a competitor company called Computervision. He flew overnight to meet the CEO, waited in the lobby all day, and eventually convinced the CEO to negotiate with him the next day in Chicago[1]. By 5 AM the following morning, Khosla had secured a handwritten contract after refusing to let the CEO leave until an agreement was reached[1]."

Why didn't I think of this?

What's the dating app?

Hey thxstripe - we just launched Edge (www.tryedge.io) with a select few beta merchants to support businesses unfairly mislabeled high-risk. We'd love to learn more (contact@tryedge.io).
