Europe buying Russian oil via India at record rates in 2023 despite Ukraine war (indiatimes.com)

Not this again.

The fact it goes through India means India gets a significant cut on the profit and Russia gets smaller profit. That's the goal.

Oil is fungible, it doesn't matter if the West buys it or some other customer buys it. The West refusing to buy oil from India (potentially coming from Russia) would not affect Russian profits.

I'm all for criticizing the West for its faltering support of Ukraine, but this is not an honest criticism. It seems like it's a topic brought up by pro-Russian sources, pushed as part of the information warfare.

I'm a little confused what you mean by this not affecting Russian profits. If India buys oil from Russia that they don't need so they can resell it to the EU then Russia is making more money then they would have. It is not like India would have bought as much oil as they currently are.

Russia is making less money than if there were no sanctions and Europe were buying direct. Russia is making more money than if every country refuse to buy from them.

The intended purpose of the sanctions was to reduce Russian profits, so that is working.

This assumes India is paying less than Europe was before.

> This assumes India is paying less than Europe was before.

I don't think this is correct since the market rate is changing all the time.

The correct phrasing should be "This assumes India is paying less than market rate for Russian oil which it then re-exports". And I think it's a correct assumption, otherwise why would they do this?

> The fact it goes through India means India gets a significant cut on the profit and Russia gets smaller profit.

Do you happen to have numbers?

It's tragic, the EU funds Putin's War while India sides with Russia and facilitates it.

Pretty sure the EU also finances the other side of the war.

Unfortunately less than 2% of what they give Russia. Liquefied NatGas, Oil through India, trade through Kyrgyzstan, etc. It adds up to 100's of billions a year flowing into Putin's war chest.

The EU is spineless and full of hypocrites. Seeing their silence and complicity regarding the ongoing genocide in Gaza it's no surprise they're also funding Russia's through buying oil by proxy.

Gaza is faaaaaar more indicting than Ukraine. They can't replace Russian oil, and the alternative to buying it, as we were shown last year, is letting people freeze.

Wait until you discover the US has been buying Russian oil and Russian uranium in spit of their own sanctions

EU spineless? come on

I always find it hilarious that the US commands its allies to apply sanctions which hurt themselves economically to Russia, while US continues to disregard its own sanctions and continues to buy from Russia the commodities the US wants.

That's the result of the Wolfowitz Doctrine that applies to keep US allies as well as US adversaries down, so the US remains 'top dog'.
