Professor in Jordan sues sleuth who exposed citation anomalies (retractionwatch.com)

One day, I really hope (ha!) that these scamming, lying, cheating types are so easily caught that the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I know it's a bit naive, but maybe the George Santos, Anna Delvey, SBF, etc that run their little scams and get caught is a lesson for them.

But this suing the person for revealing the scam is right up there with criminals suing their victims.

Honestly, I felt like the takeaway I got from the Anna Delvey ordeal was that even major banks are susceptible to worshipping those that have inherited fortunes and to such an extent that they'll ignore any due diligence, even when legally required, because god forbid they offend or inconvenience someone that both has everything and has never any of it because rewards through merits is for lowly peasants.

I'm not saying we should hate trust fund babies, but outright worship of these people as if they are inherently our betters is far more detestable than she is for recognizing this diseased worldview and exploiting it.

Suing to cover up scientific fraud? That's a new one.

I'll await the inevitable BobbyBroccoli video in 5 years.

It is new for 2023, but this guy ain’t the first. The Data Colada guys are also getting sued:

One’s only recourse to having their livelihood of fraud uncovered is to sue. These aren’t the kind of people that would say “well, time to go straight I suppose”. No, they’ll go down kicking and screaming that it’s fake, false, inflammatory, injustice, or otherwise. The bit about the university IT manual was hilarious. ACM should be ashamed.

Streisand Effect in full swing.

Speaking of which, we can now all read:

Troubling ACM Venues (January 25, 2023)

This post summarizes the problems I’ve found in ACM conferences organized by IARES, the “International Association of Researchers”.

Most of their conferences are organized under ACM’s banner, though some editions were organized with IEEE. In particular, IARES includes two researchers evidently at the center of dubious activity: Shadi Aljawarneh from the Jordan University of Science and Technology, and Vangipuram Radhakrishna from the Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology.

I summarize the problems below; curious readers can consult the spreadsheet with all details, including links to PubPeer comments for each problematic paper.
A post worth sueing over is a post worth reading.

Might be a challenge to find a replacement in time to teach winter quarter.

The judgement from the court of appeal in French overturns a previous ruling that the suit was not admissible.

I love using slop from the government to attack other slop. The only prosocial use of "science" these days.

Can we take a moment to respect the poetry of their respective names: Solal is shining light on Shadi's practices. Sun and Shade. :chefs kiss:
