Ask HN: Recommendations for Deeply Checking Laptop
2 points by southernplaces7 on Sept 22, 2023 | hide | past | favorite | 3 comments
Hello everyone. This seems like a simple enough question but a trustworthy, reliable answer can be surprisingly hard to find with the ocean of SEO garbage filler promotional content flooding search results these days.

What tools, techniques or software do you recommend for thoroughly scanning a windows machine for malware, spyware, rootkits and possibly even keystroke loggers? Any suggestions are very welcome.

I would be unsure what works with Win 10 or 11 and newer hardware, but most probably bootable solutions are out there which are fine tuned towards Win 10 or 11. Ultimate Boot CD and Hiren's Rescue CD could have some tools that will test hard drives and cables. For rootkits there were some bootable virus checking rescue CDs which worked well, but the last time I used such tools was on someone's Win 7 system.

please say "Windows" in the title

You're right, should have mentioned that not so minor detail but alas I can't seem to edit the question any more.
