Electric Vehicles: How difficult will the transition be? (backreaction.blogspot.com)

Didn't watch the video, but I feel that now's a good time to share a slightly relevant anecdote.

I'm Norwegian. A friend of mine who lives in the countryside recently told me that the owner of the only gas station is considering closing the station. It needs expensive maintenance (something involving digging) and the owner is unsure whether future income will pay for it, but also aware that there still are ICE cars in the area and no other gas stations. How difficult will the transition be?

On the west side of Oslo they tore down two gas stations for the road construction , I doubt they’re coming back with gas pumps. On the same stretch a popular gas station was recently rebuilt with fewer gas pumps and some very fast (200 or 300kW I think) charging stations. I think we’re not very far from people realising that within 5-10 years it could start getting significantly harder to find convenient gas stations. The people who drive the most are the first to transition, people don’t keep an expensive EV in their garage for occasional trips. Gasoline sales are plummeting in areas with high Ev adoption. As many have pointed out… gasoline will be sold for decades. But how much of a detour will you need to fill your tank is the question. If stories of this happening from Norway and Netherlands hits the rest of the world, I do wonder if it’ll accelerate the transition. Will car owners start worrying? Will they start loudly demanding action from their politicians, municipalities and apartment complex owners to get access to owner-night charging options? May we even see more retrofitting options?

In many countries the transition will require a massive overhaul of the grid, significant increase in electricity production, and comprehensive charging solutions.

The transition is not a walk in the park.
