My wife and I each have a separate Apple Photos library. I'd love it if we could have a combined backup solution. Could we keep using Photos and back up to this, or would it be better to ditch Photos and just switch over?

Apple Photos actually supports a shared library now: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213248

I do believe they apply extra compression to images shared via this method sadly, but haven't had time to double check.
