I moved off google photos ages ago with google’s product changes and am pretty happy with only iPhone photos. I like this because Apple the corp doesn’t know the individuals in photos and processing happens locally.

It also doesn't know how to do complex text searches on those, but to each their own.

Are you using photos just to do OCR? Seems a pretty niche use case, and something that could be easily met by an App.
