Since the SVB event I'm becoming increasingly aware of how deeply tied to the Bay Area the zeitgeist of Hacker News really is.

I live in SF, understand how sad this is, but totally agree it makes zero sense as a post here

(I also work on AVs, still wouldn't stretch this into a pro-AV thing)

Why did I post it?

I'm a cyclist. I spent over 20 years in SF. Started multiple tech and non-tech companies and worked for multiple more. I've also been a member of this site since 2009.

The last few days have been pretty rough emotionally... Bob Lee (I used his software daily for years and admired him from a distance) and now this? Along with another news of another attack [0] too.

SF has some major issues going on and the more the news is spread, the better in my eyes. Otherwise, nothing is going to change. It is also very relevant given the history of this site and its relationship with SF.

I get it's been a rough time but that doesn't really change the validity of the parent comment's point.

There's so many other venues for Bay Area people to congregate and support one another. The fact the Hacker News as a site usually manages to divorce itself from the fact that its users in the bubble of the Bay Area is a huge part of why it's as successful as it is.

It's not like I flagged this or something, but I completely agree this site shouldn't be used a sounding board for SF's issues and it'd be a real shame for posts like this to become normalized.

I disagree with you. That's ok too.

SVB wasn’t a local SF story though - tech companies around the US banked there.

Not saying SVB was a local SF story, the users on this site were just surfacing very local takes.

There was a lot of first name basis name dropping considering the exact fact that SVB wasn't some local institution.
