GNOME 3 isn't the current version anymore. GNOME 3.40 got released as GNOME 40 instead, which was succeeded by 41, 42 and now 43.
Personally I understand the criticism of GNOME 3, but I liked it a lot more than the GNOME 40 series. I've switched to KDE Plasma around this summer, I think from GNOME 42.
