I think it's less important how high are the fees right now. The fact tomorrow the fees could increase to $1000 makes the system unreliable for long term investments. The crypto payments for example had few real chances to become mainstrean but their limitations(high transaction fees, high congestion, low throughput) proved they are not practical.
