I'm aghast at the magnitude of his disastrous actions and wondering how could someone cope with the situation he put himself in, from a psychological point of view.

I 100% believe you. But just imagine if you were reading comments like those about yourself, and imagine there were a ton of them. We don't want HN to be a generator for that kind of thing. We all tend to underestimate the impact of our comments by a good 10x.
