Murano, a group of 7 islands originally independent but now a "borough" of nearby Venice, Italy. It was and remains famous for its glassblowers.


The article is either trying to be extremely subtle or it really fails to mention that glass is made of silicon, just like computer chips...


Meh, it's just silicates aka quartz aka what sand is mostly made of aka one of the most abundant minerals in earth's crust. Yes, the molecule contains an element useful for semiconductors, but that's like mentioning sodium batteries in an article about the origins of soap just because both contain Na atoms.
