Lately I'm getting more into subforums, like for niche topics you can find a forum and then you find just the right subforum, it's like HN. Mobile works really well and is often ad-free. Would mention some but for niche I think it's better to start with what you like. To me it's been a nice way to find new hobbyist efforts in areas like BASIC programming for example. The news gets around fast in those communities, otherwise you might be wondering what the status is if you're just staring at out of date websites.
