Same in Germany, but „as close as safely possible“ is around 80-100 centimeters from the right end of the handlebar - more if there are parked cars to avoid being hit by an opening door. The handlebar is usually around 60-70 centimeter wide, that places the center of the bike at around 1,20 - 1,35 meters from the right edge of the lane. A lane is about 3,00 - 3,50 meters wide - the center of the lane would be at around 1,50 - 1,75m. That‘s pretty close to the 1,20 which is the minimum safe distance. Cars that want to pass with the recommended distance of 1,50 - 2,00 meters from the left end of the handlebar need to go into a second lane in any case.
Middle of the lane is a perfectly good spot to aim for.
Not to mention that if you're planning a left turn in the next intersection, close to the right edge of the road is not "as close as safely possible" anymore. Depending on traffic volume, "as close as safely possible" may be to take the left lane an intersection or two before the anticipated turn – just like you would in a car.
