For a nominal cryptocurrency fee, my email server won't reject your inbound email. If I respond, you may even get it back. The more you send me, the higher priority I'll flag it.

That was actually the original application of proof-of-work, before it was used for cryptocurrency. AFAIK it was never widely deployed.
