Gitee to review all code by temporarily closing public open-source projects (scmp.com)

This certainly seems like an existential risk to "open" source & general economic competitiveness.

Presumably the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the ministry that hired OSChina to create Gitee, will be pouring in vast amounts of human resources to try to bring human moderation in to the system? It's boggling to me, the idea that the state would have to approve every PR. But here we are!

This is an unfortunate reminder of why we need to make sure OSS source is widely distributed and not just living on one or two vendors.

The greatest con of the Cloud driven tech era was assuring people "your Data is safe with me".

If it ain't on your drive, it ain't your data.

That in addition with the Chinese gov reminding officials that they should not own any foreign asset, something is cooking there...

Surely China is not planing on taking on Taiwan after seeing the Western reaction to the war in Ukraine?

Are they looking to avoid propaganda shame (Tiananmen, Tibet, Uighur concentration camps)?

Spyware/trojans in the code?

Or projects that compete too directly with state profitmakers?

They're trying to avoid something far more serious and harmful: people sharing solutions for HackerRank[0]. /s

Yes.

It couldn't happen here!

(The similarity to Gitea is very confusing btw)
