I actually don't understand this part. Trying to remove their external dependencies seems reasonable, but how would making them bad help?

A part of it is surely dark patterns to keep users engaged (i.e. the limited comment depth), but some of it just looks incompetent to me.



If they were truly unusable, people would stop using reddit. The fact that reddit has more traffic than ever proves the initial assumption incorrect.
