So, the statements here seem to generally be that you don't need a lot of local storage as long as you have stuff in the cloud + a good and cheap internet connection + make judicious use of the apps+storage offload features.

The argument for getting the bigger phones is precisely so you DO NOT need to worry about any of this and simply have your phone around when you need it.

Personally, my opinion is that you get what you pay for and while you can make do with a lower capacity phone, the higher capacity phones afford a different usage pattern and thus lifestyle.

You would still need to use a good backup strategy where your phone can be restored if lost etc but as a simple example this is the difference between visiting Europe for a week, as the example in the story goes and having all your videos taken in 4K, 60/120 fps and having the lower quality option that is the default HD 30fps one.
