The idea that "the road not taken" was a better path to where you are is a common fallacy. It's likely the author needed the sum of their life experience to value the investment in learning, to become an ML junkie and find their best fit.

Had they been exposed to more life choices and learning choices It's equally likely they would be living their best life as a piano player in a bordello in Mexico.

I also basically failed university, I did not deserve my second class honours degree. I've been continuously employed ever since, raised a family, travelled the world, I have no regrets beyond the obvious ones with hindsight.

Life is fleeting. Do not resent your years attempting to live "animal house" because they make you what you are as much as the uplifting valedictorian speech doesn't.
