I used to expect new hires to take a month or two before shipping real work. I think it’s still good as a courtesy - starting a new job can take some adjustment - but new hires regularly start shipping real work in a couple weeks.

This stuff where you’re supposed to be useless and confused for 6 whole months... that doesn’t seem good to me. Everything in our industry moves too fast for that, for one thing.
