This was a rabbit hole they needn't traveled into. Buy the DRM version (if that's all they could find),
then
download a deDRM'd version from the internet. There are plenty of places to do this, Google being one (intitle:index.of blah blah and such).

+1 I'd also recommend sending the author a note to take their ebook elsewhere in the future.

I tend to do this. Download the book from library genesis, then buy a physical copy.
