I feel really torn about this issue. When I was a child, the web was much simpler and similar to the ideal the author proposes. I enjoyed it a lot and today appreciate a website (like HN!) that isn't an exploding mass of APIs and functionality. I worry about users with browsers that are less feature-complete or have less computing resources than I do. If computing resources ever become a scarcity, I want someone to be able to use the internet with a 15-year-old computer if they need to. That barely even covers accessibility issues as well.

At the same time, I love the vibrant opportunities to be creative with the modern web. I recently made a submission[1] for the 7-Day Roguelike competition and used WebGL, WebAudio, and other various APIs to make something I'm really proud of. It's incredible that someone with little formal training can create art and easily share it with others over the web.

Is there a balance here? I almost want webpages to have a "simple web" view and a "rich web" option that browsers both support.
