I know someone who does that, reads it so fast the first time that I don't think they fully take it in then will go back and reread if it's worth it. Personally I like to go at a pace where I can make all the connections and take what I want from it the first time, then move onto something else.

This is essentially the approach of "How to Read a Book," recommended above. Successive re-readings with increasing focus and slower pace build a deeper impression of the books in mind.
