I don’t think it helps ATC land the plane any better, either. The number of people on the craft help determine the state the plane is in (weight, crewmanship/passenger ratio, etc.)

When a pilot declares an emergency, ATC requests fuel remaining and souls on board, of which ATC relays the latter to search-and-rescue.
