Self-driving taxis are the future. Far less waste when the vehicle isn't lying around all day taking up space and doing nothing.

I look forward to having to insert and remove three car seats for every short trip...

EDIT: By 'car seat' I mean a seat for an infant/toddler/child.

Cars for people with unusual needs are obviously going to continue being personally owned.

But mosto of us will be delighted to have access to what is effectively an Uber only cheaper and more plentiful.

I'm not sure "having kids" is a particularly unusual need...

3,952,841 babies born annually in the United States.. I don't know how long you need toddler seat, maybe 3 years?

so, 12M families would like to own a car for 3 years.. (approx. multiple with number of children)

Most kids need some sort of seat until they are 8-10.

Maybe the cars will be safe enough we can get rid of those restrictive laws.

It's not just about safety - a car seat is not ergonomically designed to accommodate a toddler.

>a car seat is not ergonomically designed to accommodate a toddler.

Neither are church pews, why are you worried about ergonomically designed seats for toddlers? Daily 8 hour car rides?

Or is it along the lines you are worried you won't be paying enough attention to your child and something horrible could... while you are not driving?

Because churches aren't changing velocity all the time, causing your body to move around. Even with safer automatic cars, we'll still need seat belts. Have you ever tried strapping an adult seat belt onto a 2 year old?

Why are cars changing velocity all the time? Not enough input and output on the conditions outside the car.

Self driving cars don't have to drive like humans, they have to drive like 90% of the other cars. Remove the humans and self driving cars can adopt far more sophisticated traffic patterns than the simple stop/go of most city traffic.

Even 10 years from now, I predict we'll still be wearing seat belts. I guess we'll see who's right :)

I don't understand. Why would you need to remove the seats?

"Car seat" in the US means an extra seat for infants that go on top of the car's native seat.

My guess is child seats.

Fair enough. It's high time that car manufacturers worked out how to make seats/seatbelts that are adaptable to all ages. Or perhaps some sort of foldaway "wings" which turn a standard seat into a child seat.

So his children can sit in them in the next car.

Specialized cars may be fetched as an option in the app..

Just as we do for airplane seats
