They said they’re looking to “move out of China,” but that almost certainly doesn’t mean the U.S. Probably India or Vietnam, maybe Turkey or Malaysia.

And even if the factory where they're assembled is in the US, they still need to import the materials/components from...most likely not the US; that's why CyberPower is looking awfully grim atm, assembly in the states, but they won't be able to make the cost of the materials remotely worth it for that reason.

I have seen this comment a lot and don't understand it.

From the U.S.'s point of view there are two goals: increase manufacturing in the States, and reduce manufacturing in China.

Even if they don't choose the States, and even if things aren't near-shored, it is still a pretty big win for the administration, no?

If that was the goal, then why did Trump pull out of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)?

As far as I understood it, it was meant to work closely with a lot of east Asias counties to counter the influence of China and to promote trade.

Now the US kinda pissed of a lot of those countries, and china stepped in to trade with them.

Their own reply to themselves is a gif of Robin Williams yelling "GOOD MORNING VIETNAM"

The Web Monetization API was another recent effort to try to make this, the latest of many attempts. See previous HN discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39274455

My guess is that 1. there’s virtually no demand from potential supporters for a more convenient way to pay creators than existing payment/subscription apps, and 2. relatively few creators have direct control over their own internet presence anymore, so any solution that requires modifying a web page is dead in the water.

Any new attempt to pay creators that doesn’t factor these two realities in will likely fail, because it just makes things harder than existing solutions.

I ordered one yesterday as I wrapping up the post, and it was already shipped early this morning.

A semantic search engine for Steam games sounds like my jam. You should put a link to it in your HN profile!

I don't like to put current projects on my profile because I jump to new ones fairly regularly, it would get out of date quickly. I'll go and put a link to my personal site on there, though.

You can see the project here: https://azstatic.danieltperry.me/steamvibes/build

I’m not 100% satisfied with the performance of the search, but it is what it is. I wanted to get what I had out instead of perfecting it all, since there's a ton of different things I can do that all have ambiguous amounts of impact to the results.

I might switch to using a different embedding model in the future since the current one I'm using seems to be fairly dated by this point.

I mentioned it in my post: in Image Capture, select the “Virtual Scanner II” device if it exists, and in the Details, set the Media to “Document” and Media DPI to “72 DPI.” You should see the preview of the first page of the Bitcoin paper. But that's only possible if the virtual device exists, and it's still unclear why it's hidden for some people but not others.

Huh. So I had a "Virtual Scanner" but not "Virtual Scanner II" when I was seeing the Treasure Island picture as a preview, but then after like a minute of doing other stuff I went back to Image Capture and it was gone and I couldn't get it back.

Others have confirmed to me that it wasn't in High Sierra (10.13) and shipped with Mojave in 10.14.0.

Hi, I wrote the post. This is patently false. There are plenty of articles about the clip, but none of the videos are still online and there’s no alternate angles, period. Please feel free to post links to prove otherwise.

Actually I think you're right, what I had been thinking of was Clinton's speech about the boxers vs. briefs question, which is readily available.

Your ad blocker is hiding the cookie popup.

That Cookie popup doesn't event fit on my screen! And the buttons are below the fold. What's more I can't tell if "No" or "Yes" is selected, there's no visual identifier other than a slight colour differentiation which I struggle with.

I disabled mine and the problem persists (same setup as above).

Knotwords is a delight, highly recommend checking it out if anyone likes this concept. https://noodlecake.com/games/knotwords/

Hi! I work on Skittish. There's a minimap (and spatial audio, chat, emotes, and a bunch of other settings/features) in the full Skittish app that didn't make it into the demo. Create a new event and try it out!

The demo works, nice avatars.

When I try to sign in, though, I get "This browser is not supported or 3rd party cookies and data may be disabled" at the signin page. I'm using Chrome. It might be my ad blocker, but I've disabled everything I can see.

Also on Firefox (no ad blockers) I just get forwarded back to the login page without any progress.
