Of course not.

The ciriticism is that malaria is just a symptom of the larger problem of a lack of economic growth and development. Aid can save a child from malaria, but it will never solve the underlying problem.

Reducing or eradicating these diseases removes a huge burden from those in extreme poverty, it definitely is among the underlying problems that contribute to a lack of growth. It's also the most tractable.

"""

Obviously there was a lot more to the Civil Rights movement than a lack of malaria. But it was one of the factors that helped. How likely is someone with “body aches, headache and nausea, general weakness, and prostration” to make it to the polls, to school, or to work? How likely are they to march on Washington?

It's easier to dream big from behind a windowscreen. Easier when you're not hungry. When you're not sick. When you're not weakened from parasites and malnutrition. And for those of us who would love to see systemic change, the "one-trick ponies" may be a good way forward. """

> I want smart teachers to take control of education so this s* doesn't happen nearly as often as it does.

This is the job of parents, not teachers. What does take control even mean? Public school teachers have no control.

> "What does take control even mean? Public school teachers have no control."

If they already had control, then they wouldn't need to take it, would they?

Good example of out of context quoting of even a short post. He said it's not the teachers' job to have the type of control that the original poster was saying that teachers should seize.

He responded to a proposal that it should be with, depending on how you interpret it:

1) An assertion that it is not currently the case. (Probably true, but completely missing the point of a proposal)

2) An unsupported assertion that it should not be the case. (An unsupported opinion in response to a thought out opinion isn't adding much to the conversation. He may as well simply respond "No, your opinion is wrong." A better comment would explain why he has that opinion.)

Plenty of spies on all sides have been killed and jailed over the years. If a country can prove a specific person committed a crime. But that's a lot harder to do with tech crimes.

What do you think spying is? By definition it is illegal. Other countries won't do anything but cry a bit because their hands aren't much cleaner.

...they will probably cry a bit and up their game. by a lot. Until someone stops just crying and boom.

"Facebook sells your data" was always a stupid charge. Why would they give away their most valuable asset when they can make more money by renting indirect access to it (targeted ads). There are actual data brokers who do sell your data and none of them make anywhere near what Facebook makes. Facebook actually has an incentive to protect your data.

Literally in every Facebook post there is someone saying how their Facebook feed is a mess and how Facebook is "declining." I'm sorry to tell you this, but it's you and the people you are friends with that are the problem. Not Facebook (all of their metrics and revenues are up). Try being friends with more interesting people (or at least mute the bad ones).

That's just one side of story. On the other hand given how much Facebook supposedly knows, it could prioritize better what's shown in the news feed. There are high chances that even these people who are complaining, still have a couple of friends who post interesting stuff.

Facebook doesn't sell data, it sells targeted ads.

Good point, thanks. I should be clearer - Facebook sells ads but reveals data to third parties, who sell data.

Facebook doesn't sell user data (it sells targeted ads, advertisers don't get access to the data).

It was the NWS in this case who was playing up the fear. The useual suspect, The Weather Channel, is the only one who got it right.

I didn't realize that. My only exposure to weather reports at this point is actually just going to weather.gov and saying "ok, might get snow, I'll go the store tonight instead of tomorrow". And stuff like this is precisely why.
