“We’re all unique and special, just like everyone else”

(Some of the stickers are kind of cool, but I just can’t understand the logic behind thinking your MacBook #12,372 with a Python sticker on the back is worth flaunting online)

The same logic applies to commenting on forums. Or doing anything publicly really.

A political speech to address constituents is public, and is not the same importance as a random posting online.

Also, I’m under no illusion that my comments are anything but digital detritus, but at least comments here have the potential to be valuable (to me), I’m not sure about laptop stickers.

I mean, why do people like doing those wine and painting evenings, even if they’re all going home with similar paintings? Why do people perform at recitals when they’re performing music that already exists? Why do people share any art, even if it’s not guaranteed to be the most original, profound, or technically proficient expression of creative intent?

Sometimes it’s fun to just enjoy something, and to share that you enjoyed it. These pictures aren’t here to impress anyone, they’re here because each one is a record of someone who had a bit of fun decorating their laptop, and an invitation to share in the fun. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that.

Because BBC doctored a Trump video? That's why? Seriously?

Your cause-and-effect logic escapes me.

It’s not that hard to see?

1. The president promotes a false narrative that the election was stolen. Media makes sure every single person in America gets coverage of this 24/7.

2. A protest happens with potential for violence.

3. President then gives a speech which wavers back and forth between calling for peace and saying inflammatory things which could escalate.

4. The media makes damn sure every single person hears the bad parts. Some media outlets go as far to edit the speech to make it seem worse than it is.

5. Everyone on one side thinks “Well, this is what the president is calling for” and everyone on the other side thinks “If they’re doing this we need to fight back ourselves”

The media has made every bad thing happening in politics worse

OK, but why single out the BBC? They're rather far down the list of influences on US public opinion.

I saw the two articles one after another on the same page. The list of unpleasant things US media has done is pretty long, but that link just happened to be in my clipboard already.

This is some absolutely insane character assassination, you should be ashamed of yourself for spreading lies and FUD like this. No sane reasonable person would make the jump from “certain statements made me uncomfortable” to “I support a racist conspiracy theory”

Wow, why is this dude so fucking angry?

>green meme arrows

Ah, I see.

Why even post this?

Because I have never had the desire to buy alcohol since there is a superior alternative. I am providing context on why me and many others are contributing to the fall of the statistic.

Then post it on your blog, nobody actually wants your thoughts on why you think you're superior for not enjoying one of the most common beverages in human history.

I enjoyed reading this thoughts, and kind of fascinated why he thinks cold water is "ruined" water. I'm not going to ask him though, it will ruin the mystery.

Posting about not drinking alcohol in a thread about not drinking alcohol is on topic. Don't enter such a thread if you don't want to see such comments.

I’m legitimately fascinated by the lack of self-awareness.

If you told soldiers that all the gambling money was going back in, I’m sure some people would be encouraged to spend every last cent, since they’re not really “losing”

I doubt it. Instead it gives cover for the institution that is making the slot machines available.

Great, now divert the money into their 401k funds and trick them into funding their own retirement.

What are you talking about? This kind of censorship and authoritarian control is peanuts compared to what China does to their citizens.

Isn’t that… exactly what the app is advertising? I don’t understand why you think those screenshots are fake.

I think the screenshots are fake because I’ve been using the internet for very long and I know how publicity campaigns work.

For starters, men with hundreds of thousands of followers have no reason to post a screenshot that shows that women have used an app to report them as creeps. That the kind of thing that belongs in a police report, not in a public social network where you’re trying to build your brand.

This automatically assumes that

1. The people being blamed actually did something wrong and thus want to hide it

2. Everyone is optimizing for likes and branding all the time

3. Someone being blamed for being a creep automatically knows the right thing to do in that situation

Seems reasonable to me that someone could post a legitimate screenshot. (Note this doesn’t imply anything about whether they did something wrong or whether the app is ethical, just that the screenshot could likely be real)

>men with hundreds of thousands of followers have no reason to post a screenshot that shows that women have used an app to report them as creeps.

lol have you paid attention the conservative man-o-sphere? Victimhood is a major component. That is, quite literally, the brand of most conservative men trying to build an online presence/brand.

Never post anything like this on HN, you will get a torrent of people A) trying to help, but not being very helpful B) telling you that you’re dumb C) telling you that you’re holding it wrong and that you need different software/hardware/preferences/etc.

I have had tons of grief with NVIDIA cards that work stellar on Windows and the answer I always get talking to Linux folks is “LOL NVIDIA? You’re an idiot for buying NVIDIA.”

My friends who daily drive Linux have accepted that I’m particularly cursed. Either that or they privately think I’m a moron. Regardless none of them seem to be able to explain my issues or help.

I welcome a good conversation.

Linux still isn't really ready for normal people who have other things to do.

Arguably if it's within your budget and you just want your computer to work, buy a Mac.

I make music and I don't want to fiddle with external drives so I'm basically stuck on Windows.

My biggest issue with Macs is not being able to replace the SSD. Eventually all SSDs must fail. Might not be in 2 years, might be in 6 or 7, but at that point the entire laptop is useless.

"It just works" was always a marketing slogan for Apple, not an actual reality. It's certainly not appropriate for an OS where perfectly standard mice have frustrating, decades-old limitations like scroll direction being tied to the touchpad settings and forward/backyard buttons not working.

If you stay in the Apple Box of supported use cases it's fine.

The customer support story is also much better. Instead of dealing with IRC channels and Reddit post trying to figure out why the latest kernel ruined everything, you go to the Apple Store.

I literally run Tumbleweed on my second laptop, I like Linux.

It's just not for people who don't want to invest time into understanding how computers work.

I wouldn't consider products you can buy on apple.com like this corsair M75 outside their supported use cases: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HRYT2ZM/A/corsair-m75-wir...

This whole thread is about how Linux is difficult because you need to understand what hardware is actually supported and you're arguing that MacOS is different because you still need to understand what hardware is supported, but the apple store will sell you something else with a smile.

I'm not even denying that MacOS is a perfectly acceptable OS, I just don't understand your argument.

Actually, you kinda have a point.

They shouldn't be selling 3rd party hardware, with an over 100% markup, that isn't well supported.

https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/gaming-mouse/CH-931D101-NA/m...

It's less than half the price anywhere else.

But Apple's argument is it's not on them if a 3rd party mouse they happen to sell has issues.

With Linux you need to do significantly more work to get setup and every now and then a kernel update can ruin your day.

I want something Ubuntu stable that actually supports newer hardware, but that's just not where Linux is at.

The Linux community is amazing, but they lack the capacity to QA every possible laptop on the market.

Just a few days ago the sound on my Tumbleweed install decided to stop working. I thought about reinstalling, Chat GPT suggested I just accept audio not working and using a USB sound card.

Eventually, thinking as a last ditch effort, I asked Chat GPT how to completely reinstall the audio stack.

This went and removed my KDE desktop for some reason. Cool, I'll install Xfce from the tty.

I then installed Budgie since it's a bit easier to use.

All this because for some reason my sound didn't feel like working.

We, the types of people who visit this site, enjoy the process.

Not everyone does.

Macs definitely have issues too.

But you can go to the Apple store and have them figure it out.

Plus a routine update probably won't stop audio from working.

I've been using Desktop Linux for about 20 years.

It's better now, but it's still work to use.
