Amazons mobile website does not have a 'splash' message asking users to download their app. This could be one reason , why their mobile web sales is higher than app sales. it will be interesting to see loyalty of customers who use apps vs the mobile web.

May be the real solution is a combination of tiered pricing and cut of all sales revenues by generics. The cost of this decision for Bayer is yet to be seen. Considering the number of users is only a few hundred at the current price point, Bayer should be ok. But, it will be interesting to see a breakdown of r&d costs of bayer in total. Considering India is one of the most popular destinations for clinical trials by drug firms, I cant shrug off a karma play here. http://www.scidev.net/en/health/clinical-ethics/news/fines-e...

same sentiment here. I've been using y! mail for a decade. Y! 'wall streetish' behavior is a good incentive to sever all ties. I am also certain , lot of their portal traffic comes when users are redirected to the portal home page when users sign off their ymail accnts.

I feel slightly more disgusted than usual because I bought YHOO stock a while ago, because it was cheap (when factoring in Asian assets, etc.).

I had hopes the new CEO would try to turn Yahoo around. I don't believe in shitty display advertising long-term, but it could be viable for another 5 years. At least, I had confidence he could fire enough Directors and VPs to make Yahoo at least as innovative as eBay (also not a particular paragon in Silicon Valley), and I was hoping Yahoo's boardmembers would start actually acting in the interests of shareholders.

I guess I was wrong.

I agree. 'sink or swim' has been the technique of preference in academics for many years. I would think it it is the same for any discipline (electronics or chemical engineer). may be the fluid abstractions used in learning software make it much harder to train people?

"A threatened person lives in a threatening world. A scared person lives in a scary world. An untrustworthy person lives in an untrusting world. A trusting person lives in a trusting world."

plenty of gems in there, but this one takes the cake. I've been trying to verbalize this exact thought for a while. tnx.

Glad it was of use to you.

Some might roll their eyes at some of what I wrote, but every 'gem' was something I learnt the hard way.

It's kind of weird, I feel like I shared more of myself in that post than any other on HN, lol.

my experience with audio books have not been enjoyable. My speed of reading is much faster the narrator's which leaves me a little impatient. and books of depth require your complete attention, in which case it easier to sit down and focus on them ( so no parallel house work..)

One possible solution (which I have used and like) is to play the audio book back at increased speed. iDevices have this feature for anything properly tagged as an audiobook; Android has options too.

first world problems

you are assuming that Sergei and Larry were not aware of this pact. if the firm's VP is aware of this pact and fired an employee over this, i would say Sergei amd Larry are guilty as well. eithet of collusion or gross neglect.

there is a good article by Ben Horowitz to this point. http://bhorowitz.com/2011/02/23/is-it-ok-to-hire-people-from...

what happened here is much bigger than a deal that goes between two friends who run a startup. it by all means seems like collusion by the overlords to ensure the minions are kept where they are to 'serve' them ( a minor exaggeration). Parts of this story is revolting, like firing and making an example of the recruiter who poached a google employee. This sickens me and is surprising , probably cause, I am not cynical enough..

An interesting article - thanks for the link.

In summary, these practices are extremely common, and Ben Horowitz recommends them. However, they are technically illegal in California.

your logic is flawed. there are plenty of activities that can make you unreachable. one example pops up ..if you are a hiker, professional or for leisure , you know you will hit spots that have no cell phone coverage.
