There exists something like this for Rutgers University. Anyone can submit a course to be tracked along with email, and once a course pops up as open, an email is sent. Text messages are not used since they are not free and this project is maintained by students, not university. But it can be easily modified and self-hosted since the source is on Github: https://github.com/v/sniper

Play the numbers game. You definitely have software development experience so apply 'as total stranger' to as many places as you can through their jobs section. With the giants (Google, FB, Amzn, etc) it may be harder to hear back from this way, but mid-sized and smaller companies are more likely to respond to you. While applying for internships and new grad positions, overall I applied to more places 'as total stranger' as opposed to via referrals from friends and received responses.

Oh I'm playing the numbers game. Hitting up companies of all sizes. But I don't think it's something I should be doing for all your career.

I'm not a fresher, though. I have been working in the industry since '07. And yes this is how my network looks like. Zero fellow programmers, zero leads (apparently) to get work.

I never thought of the career as a chain of jobs where one job leads to recognition that helps you more easily get the next job. I thought one could do fine just looking for work in a vacuum every single time. But guess I was wrong...

Have you tried to ask previous coworkers maybe they know somebody? There are certainly some programmers in your network. but mybe not on first "node".

Yeah. I usually ask if they also know anyone that is hiring. So getting into second-degree connections. It's weird considering I live in a big city. I felt like I was dealt a bad hand, but just made it worse.

Yes and no. I think Amazon is trying to make their intern recruitment process more efficient. By eliminating cheating possibilities, people who do not meet certain criteria will not move forward and thus there will be less phone screens to schedule.

Whenever I wanted to see how an English titled movie was called in another language I would look it up on Wikipedia, scroll down and click the corresponding language that I wanted on the left hand side. Well this little app does exactly that. The query inputted does not have to be a movie title, it can be anything that you want translated from English to another language. If a specific language is selected, you get to see a side by side comparison of Wikipedia translation and dictionary translation (powered by Yandex). This app is not perfect, but it has the basics needed to work. As of right now the app just picks the first Wikipedia article that it finds for the given query. In the future I plan to allow a user to pick from many related titles that Wikipedia returns. If you follow the link, on there you will find a link to the source on Github. Let me know what you think!

Nice work :)

Although I think you should emphasize that the input should be in English. When I tried it out, I did not know it and hence put in an article name in some other language hoping to see its English name. (maybe you can do the reverse of what has been done too :) )

Good point! I'll try to emphasize that more. And yes the plan at one point is to do the reverse as well, or dictionary of any language to any language :)

I applied with the link for an internship a month or two ago, its been a long '5 days' with no contact of any kind

Using the middle-button click and/or control-left click open still works the same with the 'target="_blank"' specified so this wouldn't affect the way you do things anyway

Exactly. Doing "target='_blank'" would not help me. But it would be detrimental to others.

In a site full of ordinary users, maybe "target='_blank'" is called for. But HN is aimed at the kind of people who are knowledgeable about their computers.
