This guy, Bartosz Ciechanowski, does the most well described and understandable blog posts on science and engineering that I've come across online.

Thanks :-)

I'm interested to know how they can be so sure that the change in distance between the two arms of LIGO is attributed to gravitational waves? I would of thought that miniscule movements in the Earth's crust would be a more likely culprit.

Ahh, just realised that there are two instruments located on either side of the states, so if both instruments register the same event then it is unlikely to be tectonic movement...

The LIGO mirrors and beam splitter are attached to Earth very loosely. They hang from towers of pendulums; when Earth moves, LIGO catches up eventually, but over the time it takes a gravity wave to oscillate the components might as well be in orbit.

That is one of the more routine feats of engineering involved.

This is so useful! Thank you!

Very interesting! I've been pondering what could be an effective way to gather different statistics on an active hive. Does anyone know of any projects or links worth checking out?

The last couple of days I've been trying to refine an email template and after many attempts finally started checking out some well designed examples with chrome dev tools and discovered that they were constructed as tables. I changed all my divs to table cells and finally got the thing to work!

I use Time Machine for full system backups, mainly for convenience if my SSD fails. I also rsync onto two separate drives the two main folders that I'd be devestated to lose: photos and music.

I also always liked the quote of there only being two HDD's in the world: ones that have failed and ones that haven't failed yet.

I've recently rekindled my interest of space flight by watching the series When We Left Earth (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1233514/). Loving checking out some of this site too!
