Apart from the reply you've already received, most the bad stuff like plastic nanoparticles in the air and many hard to detect VoCs are also rather blatantly an issue with PLA and other filaments.
People focus too much on smell as the only indicator.
I get some the appeal too but once you get a setup dialed in well and safely for ASA/ABS, theres rarely a reason to want to print either PLA or PETG.
Better ratio of weight to strength, far more durable parts for most jobs, and acetone smoothening opens up all sorts of doors to incredibly high quality prints without all the labor of sanding.
> These are apps where people need to be able to trust them to be exposed to the internet
Are they though? I'd argue the vast majority of even non-AI coded projects talked about on r/selfhosted are ones you would not want exposed publicly, even if they are in theory relatively secure.
Its the current term-slop to label anything changing in a way they dislike without nuance.
Yes many things are incredibly getting objectively worse, but it enables them to look at unsustainable practices in the eye and feign shock when it fails to keep steam.
It always feels such an anti-pattern this kinda stuff. Nothing stops you from having a healthy, limited relationship with the technology you have, however you define that to be.
Buy a dumb phone because you feel some aspect is addicting to you rather than meaningfully addressing it. Get an ipod because spotify is bad rather than learning to play music files in some capacity on your phone. Start buying VHS tapes and dvds because netflix is clearly the only option.
The list goes on, and all too often rather than fixing habits they just consume in a different sense until they lapse and go back to hold habits. By trying to be the opposite of 'thing' they still let 'thing' control them. Although the fact all this author's examples are still posting about it all on tiktok doesnt have me sold one bit on them healthily disconnecting.
You turn the knobs you've got. If you have a problem, and "just try harder to do the hard thing" doesn't work, you have to try something else.
I had to quit alcohol for a year+ before being able to reintroduce it in small and manageable ways. Some people have to quit forever. Not an unreasonable metaphor for device addiction.
> Nothing stops you from having a healthy, limited relationship with the technology you have, however you define that to be.
Plenty does. There's a trend in consumer technology to remove friction, like that's always a good thing, but it isn't. Sometimes an inherent limit it what's needed to keep some natural impulse in check. Remove the limit, and the impulse becomes problematic.
And that's not to mention some technology is literally designed to be addictive, to hit the same psychological buttons as gambling.
Basically, a lot of technology turns things into problems of self-control, but people only have so much. It's not reasonable to blame them for not having more self-control than they ever needed to have before.
Cute, but the industry has vastly outpaced humans at gaming and abusing the brain’s chemistry. You’ve Been Played is a good book, as is anything by Jaron Lanier.
For the majority, there is no healthy relationship with ‘technology’ — in the smartphone and modern web sense — until technology stops trying to make them into addicts.
I'd argue JXL is fairly used, least in the photography circles I involve myself in. DNG 1.7 added JXL compression and at least for sharing raws around on the web it's been a boon.
Lightroom will output 16 bit ones but you can go up to 32 bit far as I'm aware.
Of course normal JXL files support similar as well, with meaningful progressive decoding at better ratios.
If you’re talking about embedded inside DNG, then you’re talking roughly a maximum of 14 bits. There’s not really much capture beyond that , whereas this + the other formats I listed provide 16 bits. That’s quite a significant jump
IP addresses arent valid for the SNI used with ECH, even with TLS.
On paper I do agree though it would be a decent option should things one day change there.
I think that would have been an alternate present rather than a plausible future.
ECH needs for the outer (unencrypted) SNI to be somewhat plausible as a destination. For ECH GREASE what happens is that this outer SNI was real, what looks like the encrypted inner ECH data is just random noise.
For non-GREASE ECH we want to look as much like the GREASE as we can, except that it's not noise that's the encrypted payload with a real inner SNI among other things.
This might be more of a gen Z and zillennial thing but the embedding of black & white purity tests in almost all social settings is a big factor.
You must have opinion and they all must align perfectly like mine. Case and point people's behaviors around the 2024 election.
Russian? You better be the most outspoken anti Putin-ist . Jewish? You better be sorry for the Zionists at every turn. Queer? Oh sorry you work for Google and even if your department has nothing to do with the current bads you're bad too, stop stealing from artists with AI.
Those are some extreme and blatant examples but ones I've witnessed cause people to get excommunicated no matter how bleeding of a heart they have for the causes people rhetorically crucify them over.
I'm not going to pretend you should be fine if say, a literal unironic nazi is trying to cozy up in your book club, or some clown is constantly bringing up "hot takes" needlessly on your baseball club. But these constant purity tests typically remove all nuance and leave both sides heavily alienated, leaving many to fall into a hedgehog's dilemma of fearing interactions lest they're accused of things they simply are not.
