Anyone have access to Pacer and can get us the filings since this article was written?

Virginia Eastern District Court Case # 1:23-cv-00043

I’m not familiar with any ways to get free access

https://www.pacermonitor.com/public/case/47432813/Wilson_et_...

It looks like some of it is available via RECAP, which can be found here.

Beyond that as another poster noted, you'd have to buy the additional files via PACER.

Pacer charges per page, but if you keep it under $30 in a quarter the bill is forgiven (so free).

You'll eat up 300 pages pretty quickly - there's roughly 20 filings between now and March 10 which I'm guessing is around when this article came out, probably too many pages to fit under the free limit but then again a lot of the activity isn't very interesting.

Section 3 paragraph 1 states

> Not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act…

It looks like it was signed into law by the President on 3/20/23

Former teacher here with a similar experience. It's not only that it's not worth it, teaching for the most part doesn't even pay a living wage. You can't make up the difference with a summer job since the "summer vacation" has gotten shorter and shorter over time it seems. In addition, teachers usually have to do professional development over the summer as well as we always started back before the students did.

One of the districts I worked at didn't have an attendance policy and allowed students to do credit recovery with online courses. It's incredibly difficult to convince middle and high school students to struggle through learning when they know from their fellow students they can make up the credit later and just google all the answers since the proctors for credit recovery didn't really pay attention. They all had their phones on their leg under the table searching for all the answers while the proctor sat and ignored them.

what's really sad is, it's been like this for decades. when i was in highschool in the US in the 80s i was told that teachers salaries were very low.

now i had fantastic and very motivated teachers, and at that time i concluded that the low salary would help select for teachers that really believe in their work, and weed out those who are in it just for the money.

but paying less than a living wage is likely only attract the desperate who can't get a better job.

this is insane.

Does anyone know if James had taken a short hiatus between jobs to travel by motorcycle for a while in Southern California? I ran it someone one day at The Rock Store that had worked with Aaron Swartz and a friend and I had a great conversation with him and I’m now wondering whether it was James.

Yes, indeed he did! After leaving FPF, he unplugged for a while, taking a road trip on his bike. He spent a lot of time working on that bike.

The road trip was a great excuse to unwind after a lot of stressful security work. He ended up rejoining the industry—good luck stopping that guy from anything—and continued for many years helping other projects.

So, yes, it does sound like you were fortunate enough to cross paths with a terribly interesting individual. Cheers, in his honor.

I'm surprised he hasn't rearranged his garage to fit his truck in so he can do his testing from there. It's hard to tell for certain from the picture but it looks like it should fit height-wise.

I think this is the kind of guy who has better uses for his garage than vehicle storage.

What is the cost of a Verified Certificate for this course?

According to the pricing section of the Verified Certificate page, the minimum fee varies by course but I can't find a way to determine the minimum fee without an account.

After plenty of clicking around after logging in I found this page:

https://courses.edx.org/course_modes/choose/MITx/15.390.1x/3...

Which indicates the minimum fee is a $50 contribution.

It feels like edX could do much better in making that pricing information available before enrolling but perhaps their testing has indicated otherwise.

Why is the copyright notice in a scripting file instead of something almost guaranteed to be statically served? Or was that part of the attack?

Jesse, any idea when I'm going to be able to download my backups from Rackspace cloud servers and instantly/directly load them into either VMWare or Virtualbox? I asked about this a while ago and was told it was coming with the move to OpenStack.

So, I spoke to the product team and they told me that this is still in the pipeline and part of the plan. The team is pretty heads down focused on scalability, performance and other key items - so yes, this is still coming, and hopefully sooner rather than later.

Sorry I can't give you a specific date, but I don't want to set unreasonable expectations.

No worries. Thanks for the info!

I've reached out to the Cloud Servers team and will post what I find out.

I know the original comment was deleted but I wanted to comment on this anyway since I spent the last school year teaching in a low-income high school.

First off, don't assume that the two are mutually exclusive. One of the things you learn as an educator in a tough environment is that you need hobbies as an outlet to survive and not become depressed. If you do start to go down that rabbit hole of depression you can have a poor outlook on your and your student's ability to succeed and that is not what an ideal educator needs in order to be successful in the classroom.

Second, I could have used this app over the last year to make me a better teacher. The ability to capture thoughts with words and pictures like this app provides would have been phenomenal for my organization and let me be more effective. I tried other apps and they would not have been as useful as this one would have been so don't discount it because the time was spent working on it instead of other problems that you feel are more deserving of attention.

I don't feel like the larger issue was addressed by the CEO in the post and Apple seems to be avoiding it as well.

According to the AllThingsD article [1],

"But sources close to the company [Apple] say it was more than a little troubled that AppGratis was pushing a business model that appeared to favor developers with the financial means to pay for exposure. ... In other words, app-discovery platforms built on paid recommendations aren’t going to fly with Apple."

If this is their business model and this is really the issue, then it needs to be directly addressed by both sides.

This is an interesting point. Just curious why did the AllThingsD article cross out: "In other words, app-discovery platforms are fine as long as they’re not built on paid recommendations." and replace it with "In other words, app-discovery platforms built on paid recommendations aren’t going to fly with Apple."

My guess is that app-discovery platforms could also not be allowed for reasons other than "built on paid recommendations"
