My silicon valley based employer did same pay bands throughout the UK but people in my regional office were offered roles in lower bands for their skill set compared to London. It was more money for less responsibility compared to local companies so not a hard decision.

I have never been but comedian Tony Hawks' 2001 book "Playing the Moldovans at Tennis" was my introduction to Moldova.

"All I knew about Moldova were the eleven names of men printed on the inside back page of my news paper. None of them sounded to me like they were any good at tennis."

I'm writing this from an older laptop, a Lenovo ThinkPad X121e from 2011. Intel CORE i3 processor, 8GB RAM, spinning rust disk. I bought it new, it was cheap and I liked the small form factor. It came with Windows 7 but has run a Linux MATE desktop environment for a long time.

From a compute perspective, this specification is adequate for what I use it for - primarily spreadsheets, letter writing and tax returns.

The main problems are with hardware/deterioration. The OS started displaying warnings about the battery so I run it off mains with the battery removed. I looked at replacement batteries but they are either woeful or expensive or both. I don't live in a hot climate but automatic shut-down due to overheating has started to become an issue. Anything CPU intensive is risky. Tweaking CPU throttling and monitoring via sensors hasn't helped. The built in screen stopped working but has mysteriously come back to life.

I've had my money's worth but I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand 10 year old laptop.

The UK has unit pricing[0] though I can't remember when it was introduced.

This kind of roundabout is awful for pedestrians and drivers: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.5737159,-5.9326045,127m/da...

Surprise! I'm going to walk in front of you.

It's funny how the Run Coaching is placed in the middle of the roundabout!

This is fair. The UK has box junctions which have many non-obvious rules.

Peak time congestion requires a local form of driver etiquette. My city would grind to a halt without it.

I live in the UK where roundabouts are ubiquitous and most people still don't understand them perfectly. The Highway Code[1] is too ambiguous.

- give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights

- watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all

The second rule means if you have already entered the roundabout you have right of way over traffic yet to enter the roundabout to your right. What can happen in practice is that people to your right rock on and beep you out for the temerity of getting there first.

I don't know for certain but expect it comes from comparing solutions with those based on virtual machines like Java's. The requirements in the original article look like a corporate wish list.

I agree with you.

> Easy styling, including dark mode

I wonder if this requirement has been imposed from above.

When the web was taking off I received designs from the UI architect in the form of VB6 applications. Windows was the dominant platform at the time. Never mind it made no sense in the context of more fluid HTML layouts. This was before CSS.

Since then the web has probably trained the holders of the reins that they can violate user interface norms everywhere.
