The idea, as I understand it, is that: A. Before the 2038 date the article suggests we must move to EV by, many/most cars will need to be replaced. So, the suggestion isn't necessarily to throw away good cars, as much as to replace them with an EV when they are replaced. B. Currently the electricity used to charge your EV may not be emission free, but someday it might be. Whereas gasoline will never be emission free. And if everyone has EV's already, then the benefit of cleaning the grid becomes greater and easier to justify to a decisionmaker. So while EVs wont solve the problem, it maybe could be said that the problem cannot be solved without first switching to EVs.

- "but this isn't the category of error you make at that level of risk." People do make all types of errors at all levels of risk. I often see comments in the vein of "He spent 44 billion dollars, I'm sure he has a plan", as support for theories that give Elon more credit, in terms of intelligence or capability. There are countless examples of humans through history throwing away fortunes or destroying kingdoms over petty spats, or out of ego, or stupidity, or for no discernable reason at all. I don't think giving powerful people the benefit of the doubt in this way is a good idea. It lends support to the idea that they're more rational in general (because all their choices likely have higher risk, they have more to lose after all), and from there it would be easy to argue that they deserve their power and should have more.

The news this morning is the poll result means he will be hiring someone to replace him, which is likely a win for all involved. It's going to take some time, and he can make some of the necesary changes in the mean time. Twitter is not an institution, it's a rigged slot machine that pays out in temporary fame. Most complaints I see about Musk are backbiting, and I find it lowering and exacerbating to that kind of attitude.

I'm teaching a TEALs class at the moment, my first time, and can confirm it's a great experience. I have 1 or 2 classes a week, each about an hour and a half, and I do maybe another hour of prep before each class. The curriculum is all provided, so you just need to get familiar with it, not write it yourself. I'd be happy to answer more questions about it if you'd like! In my experience they were super responsive, so if you've already applied you'll probably be hearing back from a rep soon.

What's the name of the nonprofit? I'd be interested in learning more! Email is in my profile

Currently updating our website but it's https://nightowlrecon.org

Forgot that we cant message on HN but it doesn't look like your email is in your profile. Feel free to shoot me an email at nick dot price[@]nightowlrecon.org

I love this idea, and have been interested in seeking out opportunities to teach or aid in education in general. I'm afraid I'm not familiar enough with HN to know how to send you a message other than a comment, but I'd be intrigued to hear more about what you have in mind.

my bad. Please e-mail me at maxime.caron@gmail.com if you are still interested.

My project is mostly about teaching reading and math to young children in a more effective way.

A good idea, but unfortunately I tried this for a year and found that without the structure of a work day to keep me moving I slipped into depression. Ultimately I decided I needed to be working with others for the sake of my mental health.

That sounds like a great project, I live in the midwest and spend a lot of time trying to eradicate garlic mustard and buckthorn from my property. If you happen to have any resources on hand about how to promote environmental health with resilience to climate change in mind I'd love to read them.

I'd love that too, although I wonder if some of the negative behaviors that emerge in social media are more inherent to human nature than the implementation of the media... Which is not to say current companies are doing all they should, but I suspect preventing these behaviors will be a genuine challenge for anyone attempting to implement any form of social media. I could see myself contributing though if there was a promising project in progress.

Becoming a landlord and offering below market rent is an interesting suggestion I've never considered. Previously I've had concerns about buying property with the intention to rent because by purchasing the property at all I'm applying upward pressure on housing prices. Its definitely worth thinking about, thanks!
