I've used Mailplane for years - http://mailplaneapp.com

Yes, it is "just" a wrapper, but it's nice having Mail and Calendar in a separate dedicated app. I can restart my browser without impacting my mail, and the integration with the desktop (e.g. mailto: links just work, I can use quicklook on attachments, better drag and drop support, etc.) make it worthwhile.

Any word on whether it will have support for wifi behind captive portal? I've got a Chromecast v1 that I was excited to bring it on trips with me to watch Netflix from the hotel room, but I could never get it to connect to hotel networks which always have the stupid captive portal authentication scheme.

Most hotel WiFi networks enforce device isolation too, so I don't think you can 'see' the chromecast even if you could authenticate it. The workaround is to create your own hotspot, bridging the hotel's WiFi to your own 'travel router,' using a laptop.

At that point, it's probably easier just to watch Netflix on the laptop... :-/

Chromecast has guest mode now, you can set up without being on the same WiFi network.

Why not change your laptop's MAC address to that of the chromecast, authenticate on the laptop and then plug in chromecast?

Client isolation prevents routing of multicast packets for device discovery.

Guest Mode?

Some hotels I stayed at went as far as disabling HDMI ports on their TVs, which is extremely annoying.

I've been on the internet long enough to remember that Tucows originally stood for "The Ultimate Collection of Windows Software"

It has been long enough that your memory is faulty.

The "W" stood for "winsock", as in the Windows Socket API, as in network software for MS Windows.

We're an ADP customer and I'm shocked at the state of their technology.

Not only is their customer portal IE only, they mandate the use of an ActiveX control from 1997. Proof:

Brutal. If this is the state of ZenPayroll's competition they're in a good spot.

I agree, they obviously don't test what they roll out. It is very amateur, updates look like they are pushed right into production given the obvious nature of the bugs we have seen. They have multiple interfaces, when we were testing it out we saw lookup data was inconsistent across interfaces, and there was no built in customer validation of data. All data validation is done by the end approver. They actually subcontract out most of the development work, definitely not a modern technology driven solution.

https://harp.io/ is doing something similar as well.

Sure would be nice to get IE10 support into Zepto.js. IE support is one of the main reasons we continue to use Jquery Mobile, but Zepto would meet our needs (with a bit of re-work) at a much smaller download size.

GM builds the automatic transmissions for many BMWs. Clearly some Germans think that GM knows what they're doing.

Being a diesel fan, and a 4x4 enthusiast I am pretty familiar with transmissions from different vendors. GM and their Allison division are know for producing some of the most reputable transmissions available. Their TH400 line is a staple in drag-racing, off-roading and most any high power application. In high power applications it is a given that the GM TH400 will be the transmission selected even if it is a Ford or Mopar powered vehicle.

They are correct in their assumption that software more and more is becoming the defining factor. Software has improved the automatic transmission to the point where humans cannot perform as well as shift points being set by software. We are amazing creatures that can instinctually feel many variables but if you can account for all of those variables and more in software we can be outperformed. Power train technology has reached that point and even vendors like Ferrari have taken notice. Vehicle connectivity and automation is the next revolution. Moving parts will be reduced to a minimum as software controls replace mechanical control parts. It has been a long time coming but software has reached the point where embedded controllers are expected and do provide the longevity of the mechanics it is replacing. The process started a long time ago with fuel management but much like the PC revolution and the mobile revolution, the proper convergence at the proper time has not taken place in the automotive market. I think it may be here now, and I think the shakeup in Detroit was needed to bring it about.
