I remember those late 90s VR chat apps. None of them figured out the controls, usually opting for some sort of awkward three knob style navigation widgets. Interface was via browser widget so it barely worked on every platform. Everybody wanted to make Neuromancer's Other Plane, but the tech wasn't even close to ready.
Uuh, AI research has nothing to do with coding all nighters. This is a common misconception among software engineers. It is more a science, and less an engineering problem. It is more about running experiments than it is writing fancy algorithms.
You are bound by the amount of data and computational resources you have at your disposal. Neither are tied to man hours. You can stay up all night for days waiting for your model to train, and it will do you no good.
Is the goal of the AI model to predict crime rates in a hypothetical world where everyone has equal rates of lead exposure?
What a terrible example. There are many other features being omitted that would predict crime rates. If anything, this is an example of enforcing your own bias on the model by not including all relevant features.
Great then go ahead and include additional features. The problem is, recidivism rates in real life are not equal so as the model increases in accuracy it will inevitably produce disparities in its results.
This. Exactly this. No sophisticated tokenization. No interesting architecture using attention. And the author is completely clueless about overfitting... and even cross entropy loss. He could have gotten better results just using a bag of words approach.
But this ends up on frontpage anyway. Welcome to HN.
By now it's clear from your history of behaving aggressively in HN threads that you don't mean to use the site as intended. I've banned the account. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21245546
I'm sad to do that because you are knowledgeable about a number of things. Many of us could learn from you if you would share what you know without putting other people down. But the aggression subtracts more than the knowledge adds. We can't have users behaving like this sort of asshole in comments, least of all in Show HN threads, where the idea is to teach people things and expressly not to shit on them and their work: https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html.
Other users here know things and are willing to talk about them without being mean. GistNoesis modeled this wonderfully in the GP comment. We'll learn what we can from them instead. But if you decide that you want to use HN in the intended spirit, as described in the site guidelines and especially the one that says Be kind, you're welcome to email hn@ycombinator.com and let us know.
Billion dollar franchises have always included a big dumb story, CoD, Warcraft, Diablo, Elder Scrolls ect. Even Doom has a story it's just there to be pushed aside, but still is a story. Pushing aside the story is part of what makes that game great fun.
The ludology/narrative split in games is always there even if you pick only one side. Walking sims still have gameplay and multiplayer first person shooters still have lore & world building.
It literally has scenes where you do not shoot things, are not allowed to shoot things and cannot shoot things so that you can listen to Samuel Hayden tell you what you have to do. Or Vega. Or Olivia. You have passageways in levels that are empty of gameplay with voice over that cleverly looks like gameplay but is the same as a walking simulator. It has rooms that lock you in and give you 30sec of voice over and visuals to tell you what's happening and you get a power up at the end.
It has a fleshed out world with characters, big green blocks you can touch to get lore and story progression via action. Smashing the argent accumulators opens hell and progresses the story.
You may have ignored all that, but it is there.
'Just gameplay' is beat saber or DDR or a gameplay prototype. Go play them.
Huh? Carriers are intended to be mobile bases for launching aircraft that go on to stage air strikes. While they are armed, they aren't intended for attacking other ships.
And what size of payload would a drone need to take down a carrier? That is just silly.
