Hypertext existed. Plan files existed. FTP already existed.

In fact, the only surprising feature of www is that no one bothered to include bidirectional linking, to disastrous consequence.

He didn’t invent anything either, though. www is just a less-than-half implementation of Xanadu.

EDIT: To be clear, I don’t intend that as a knock against Sir Berners-Lee. But the post I’m responding to invokes a false dichotomy.

> Sir Berners-Lee

Nit: The Brits say "Sir Tim." </pedantry>

There were more systems out there, not just Xanadu.

All of which were similarly fractional implementations of Xanadu.

Ted Nelson coined the term hypertext in the 60s.

Turbo Pascal help was using hypertext. Many people were exposed to it by the 80s

Again, all of this comes from Ted Nelson. He also had philosophical antecedents, but in terms of software it was his dream of Xanadu that was the first hypertext system.

However, it’s worth pointing out that every attempt at Xanadu (under the name Xanadu) thus far has also turned out to be a fractional implementation of Nelson’s dream.

And yet this very post positions Typst as a potential alternative to LaTeX. In other words, LaTeX is still in the top position.

Personally I think ConTeXt is a far superior tool, though its documentation is always trailing quite a distance behind its current capabilities.

Governments can equally allow private companies this same capacity.

TIL that no one has ever been in trouble for driving without insurance.

You would be truly surprised by how many people are doing exactly the same thing when it comes to releasing their music on streaming platforms.

This is not true. I’m sorry but the Splice userbase is hardly the size of earth’s music producing population.

Correct, but think upstream from Splice. Most percussion, risers and ear candy come from the same place. Think back to Super Seal records and crate digging. If you use samples, regardless if you subscribe to Splice or not, the sample you found, is on Splice.

TIL that the lime still wires

But your example just proves that the trademark avenue is not a genuine moat for Disney. If dozens of trademarks have been given for logos containing Jesus Christ, then there can be dozens of logos containing Steamboat Willie.

The Wintel coalition was anti-competitive to an extreme degree. It may have faded to the background at this point but they were caught red handed multiple times using their market dominance to utterly destroy innovative alternatives.

It doesn’t excuse Apple’s behavior, but imo they still have a long way to go to challenge the track record of MS and Intel.

All those things were done under Gates and Ballmer. When Nadella stood up on stage in his first year as CEO under a big banner that proclaimed "MS (heart) Linux", I said "I'll believe it when I see it." Well, over the next decade or so, I saw it, and now I believe it. Microsoft under Nadella just plain behaves differently (and much better) than they used to behave under Gates and Ballmer.
