Very nice. Most posts are classified as "Non-technical post" these days.

Was hoping for a way to filter on "technical", for when I need my dose of hacking and technology. (Filter on category could also help, but I assume there are many technical categories.)

And maybe reverse sort, for when I'm tired of controversy.

That's part of the marketing tease... sign up to find out, or move on if you're not interested. Or get the pitchforks if you hate being teased.

Damned if they do AI, damned if they don't.

Reading this thread on HN made me sad. Massive negativity/cynicism.

Where have all the hackers gone? Those who enjoy discussing technology, or appreciate something clever. Discussion of CPUs and sensors, or miniaturization and packaging.

Any other good forums where people discuss engineering and technology? Or even design and usability?

(I'm not against sustainability, but long discussions on EU regulations get tiresome. Yes, I collapsed them, leaving almost nothing.)

I don’t know, I see a lot of people excited about it and many others trying hard to imagine a use case. Many comments from people saying they’re ordering one.

Commenters are discussing the design and usability. Not all of that is going to be positive.

If you’re looking for a positivity-only environment where no critical questioning is socially acceptable, maybe try LinkedIn or Product Hunt? There are forums where negativity is not allowed or not socially acceptable, but those forums are not good sources for actual critical thinking or discussion.

Ouch...

Au contraire, you'll look like a Secret Service agent talking into your wrist.

> if there was a single button audio recording app

Would the watch require 1 or 2 hands to record audio?

The ring seems easier to use while biking. Or driving.

It's easy to use a Pebble while driving. Not like you can't take one hand off the wheel briefly to hit a button.

Can't you just say "Hey siri, add a note"? I add reminders, send texts, etc. that way.

Yeah, there's lots of places you can't speak out loud bc it's disruptive to others though. Personally I set a lot of Siri reminders, but it's weird and uncomfortable to talk loudly at your phone in public spaces so I can only use it at home or outdoors. If the ring can follow through on the promise of being able to whisper to it, that's fairly valuable imo

You can whisper to Siri on your phone or your watch too - that’s not a ring exclusive.

Definitely, but Siri is terrible at understanding quiet speech and you have to hold your phone/watch right up to your mouth. A ring is definitely a much nicer form factor for that.

There is the small matter of a 3-4dB price difference between this ring gadget and your "Hey Siri" capable watch.

Design inherently involves trade-offs. Size, weight, cost, water resistance, etc.

> requirements that you sacrifice your retirement and financial well being

Holding index funds seems reasonable (Total Stock Market, S&P 500)... not a huge sacrifice imo

Definitely prefer something like Total market, even 500 companies is too much of a bias towards one group. Especially with the S&P500 currently looking like an S&P10...

this feels like a no brainer solution, but just seems like a wonderful wishlist that won't happen, ive heard it a lot.

I am wondering why i don't hear anything like: if a church or group representing a church get involved with politics, through lobbying or any other type of means, their tax free status is revoked and they are treated like a normal entity.

it seems like a similar type of thing that in my eyes at least, is a no brainer, but is just as likely to be chopped down because of how our current system functions.

I think we have our hacker/power-user blinders on. It was cool to hate Clippy.

But many non-tech-savvy users felt differently, and were accepting of the attempt to provide help.

what if clippy's true purpose was sales/marketing and not productivity?

back in the day people needed to be convinced that they needed a computer and that they'd be able to figure it out.

if you see clippy on a showroom floor or on your friends pc, you might think "oh yeah, i suppose I could use a computer to do that!".

Is it really a contradiction?

Convincing people they maybe should get a computer worked much better if they saw that it might increase their productivity.

Techy folks all already had one back then, and Clippy was aimed at those still writing their correspondence on a typewriter. I have no doubt that switching to a computer was productive for them, even if it increased Microsoft sales in the process.
